Challenges and Innovations in Waste Management in Lima

Lima faces a significant challenge in waste management, with over 7,400 tons of waste generated daily. Despite efforts, not all waste is properly disposed of in landfills, leading to environmental concerns.

The Hospital Hipólito Unano de la Agustina decided to construct a hospital solid waste treatment plant due to the need to manage the waste generated by medical operations. This project, funded through the National Public Investment System, is the only one of its kind in Peru and serves as a crucial facility for handling biocontaminated waste.

The hospital's waste treatment plant was inaugurated earlier this year and processes approximately 1,200 kilograms of biocontaminated waste. This includes items like needles, blood bags, cotton, and glasses that have come into contact with patients, ensuring they are sterilized to eliminate any potential health or environmental risks.

The new waste management system ensures that hazardous waste is transported in specialized storage vehicles, reducing risks for cleaning staff. The system is designed to prevent direct contact with waste, enhancing safety measures and minimizing exposure to dangers like needles and blood.

The waste treatment plant operates by crushing waste, then subjecting it to steam injection at 138 degrees Celsius and 3.8 bar pressure for 8 to 10 minutes to achieve complete sterilization. This process destroys blood, germs, viruses, and bacteria, rendering the waste harmless and suitable for disposal in a sanitary landfill.

The final product of the waste treatment process is unrecognizable, with mixed waste like cotton and syringes transformed into a completely sterilized and unidentifiable form. This ensures that the waste poses no risk to public health and can be safely disposed of in a landfill.

Cities must take responsibility for managing the waste they generate. Initiatives like the Hospital Hipólito Unano de la Agustina's waste treatment plant set a positive example, but more efforts are needed.
